Malaysia failed to repeat their exploits of the 2002 Busan Asian Games when their men's team crashed to a 17-48 defeat to Japan in their last group match.
Japan qualified for the semi-finals for the first time with the win.
In 2002, Japan were in a similar position, needing a win to qualify for the medal playoff. However, Malaysia stunned the Japanese squad for their first win at the Asian Games.
However there were no such fairytale ending for the Malaysian side this time around.
Two lonas in the first half, saw Japan leading 26-7 at the break. In 2002 the score at first half between the two teams was 0-0.
Japan picked up two more lonas to wrap up the match and put themselves in contention for a medal. They will face India in the semi-finals.
