DAY OF THE DRAGONS

Tamillan Kabaddi’s unbeaten run in the Premier League Kabaddi came to an end at the hands of table toppers Dri Devi Dragons at the Kampong Pandan Grounds.

Until their meeting, both teams were the only unbeaten teams in the league. But when the dust settled after a heated match, it was the Dragons who stood tall.

The Dragons maintained their stranglehold at the top of the points standings with an emphatic 59-31 win over the Tamillans.

And the Dragons managed to pull off the win despite missing two of the first team players through injuries.

Earlier, the Dragons also defeated their junior squad – Sri Devi Tigers - 73-64 after being shocked by an early onslaught by their younger rivals.

The Tigers stunned the Dragons into action after carving up two lonas over their high-riding teammates.

Only three matches on schedule were played this week, allowing some of the teams to participate in another tournament played in Kapar.

In the other match, Tamillan Juniors defeated a much improved Kg Pandan Tigers 74-34.

In the women’s competition, Sri Devi Princess picked up their biggest win yet with a 118-14 thrashing of Damansara.
Damansara were forced to field a depleted side and lacked the teamwork needed to foil the more experienced Princess.

In another match, Sri Devi Angels picked up their first win of the competition with a 63-44 win over Segar Shines.

The win did not come easy as the Angels started on a disastrous note, trailing by as many of 15 points at one stage in the first half.

However, they used their bigger physique to full use as the match progress to notch up the win.

JUDGEMENT DAY

It will be a day of judgement for Tamillan Kabaddi in the Premier League Kabaddi championships this weekend (31st May 2009) in Kg Pandan.

The Tamillans will see their unbeaten run in the competition under serious threat as they will be up against table toppers Sri Devi Dragons.

The Tamillans and the Dragons are the only unbeaten teams in the league.

The Dragons have at least two key players on the crock list and will have to play with a depleted side in the all-important clash.

Tamillans are not troubled by any injuries but their form of late has not been encouraging. They have been struggling in recent weeks and will have to raise their game against the weakened Dragons.

The Dragons will play two matches this week. They play their junior squad – Sri Devi Tigers in their opening match.

In the women’s competition, Sri Devi Princess would be looking to strengthen their grip at the top of the table when they take on Damansara.

Kabaddi included in Traditional Sports Carnival

The Youth and Sports Ministry has included kabaddi as one of the sports in the National Traditional Sports Carnival.

The inclusion was made through the efforts made by the Kuala Lumpur Kabaddi Association.

Kabaddi will be the first non-Malay traditional sport to be included in the annual carnival. The other sports competed at the carnival are Galah Panjang, Tarik Tali, Laga Ayam, Sepak Raga Ratus, Sepak Bulu Ayam, Rebut Negeri and Kelereng.

The Traditional Sports Carnival has been taking place for the last five years.

Each state runs its own state level carnival and the winners of each sport at the state level are picked to represent the state at a national level competition. Kedah is expected to be the first of the states to conduct their state level competition on June 14 at a Felda near BUkit Kayu Hitam.

Last year, Sarawak emerged as the overall champions at the national level competition held at the Taman Tasek Titiwangsa in KL.

The Kabaddi competition at the carnival would be for both the men's and women's team.

In line with the inclusion, the Sports Ministry has sought the assistance of Kelab Sukan Tradisi Harmoni Kuala Lumpur and the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur to assist them in conducting workshops for youth organisations throughout Malaysia.

The first workshop was held in Kuching, Sarawak from May 15-17. The northern zone workshop was held in Baling Kedah from May 18-20. The northern zone workshop was attended by youth organisations from Kedah, Perak, Perlis and Penang.

The next workshop is scheduled in Kota Kinabalu from May 27-29.

The Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur is thankful to the Sports Ministry for accepting our suggestion to include kabaddi in the carnival. The inclusion is expected to help greatly in the growth of the sport among the grassroots.

DRAGONS ON FIRE

Segar failed to stop the rampaging Dragons

Leaders Sri Devi Dragons crushed Segar 127-44 to keep up their relentless push for the inaugural Premier League Kabaddi crown.

Playing at their homeground in Puchong, the Dragons were in commanding form to notch up their sixth consecutive win in the competition.

The Dragons were beaten for the first time in more than a year at the Bukit Pelandok Kabaddi Championships in Negri Sembilan last week and were determined to put behind their disappointment against Segar.

Hot in their chase is Tamillan Kabaddi, who are the only other remaining unbeaten team in the competition.

Unlike the Dragons, the Tamillans struggled to a 31-21 win over Damansara in their match on Sunday. The Tamillans have been struggling of late against the weaker teams and were almost beaten by Segar recently.

The side have two crucial matches in the next round of the Premier League Kabaddi on May 31. They will be up against leaders Dragons as well as third placed Selayang.

If their recent form is of any indication, the Tamillans could lose their unbeaten streak in two weeks time.

In another match Damansara suffered their second defeat of the week as they were also beaten by Tamillan Juniors 36-52.

It was a mixed day for the Kg Pandan Lions. They defeated their second team – Kg Pandan Tigers – 82-29 but were beaten 33-42 by a much improved Sri Devi Tigers.

In the women’s competition, Segar Brights moved into second place in the table behind Sri Devi Princess after defeating a lackluster Sri Manjari 62-43.

They are tied on 6 points with the Princess but have an inferior scoring rate and have played one extra match.

Wounded Dragons seeking Fire

Can Segar withstand the wounded Dragons?

After a week of mixed fortunes, Sri Devi Dragons would be looking bounce back to their winning ways when the Premier League Kabaddi resumes this weekend.

The PLK took an unscheduled break due to the participation of the teams in other open competitions and the Dragons were in the thick of these competitions.

They won the Sri Devi Invitational in convincing fashion last week but were brought down to earth by Bukit Pelandok in an open tournament held in Negri Sembilan on Sunday.

The defeat was the sides first in any competition this year and must be considered as a wake up call for the high riding Dragons.

The Dragons are expected to unleash their fury of losing to Bukit Pelandok when they take on Segar in their PLK encounter this weekend at their home ground at the 14th mile in Puchong.

Segar are currently lying second last in the points tables and would be hard pressed against their more experienced rivals.

The expected win would further strengthen the Dragons position at the top of the table as second placed Tamillan Kabaddi would not be able to overhaul their scoring rate.

Both the Dragons and the Tamillans are currently on level points but the Dragons have a much superior scoring rate.

The Tamillans have a tricky match against Damansara but are still expected to pull through.

With darkhorses Selayang given an off day, the attention would be on the chasing pack. Sri Devi Tigers can consolidate their position among the top four if they get past the Kg Pandan Lions.

The Lions are restructuring their team and have not been able to make their mark as expected in the PLK so far. But if the Lions are able to hold their own against the Sri Devi Dragons, they may have a good chance of leaping up to fourth place in the table.

The Lions play their second team Kg Pandan Tigers earlier in the day, in a match they should come out tops.

Upcoming Tamillan Juniors can also move up the ranks but they will have first have to beat two established clubs this weekend – MIG Sentosa and Damansara.

With almost all the lower ranked teams having to play two matches this week, there should be plenty of changes in the points tables. However, none of these teams would be able to overtake the three front runners in the PLK – Sri Devi Dragons, Tamillan Kabaddi and Selayang.

In the women’s competition, Segar Brights would be looking to dislodge leaders Sri Devi Princess at the top of the table. The Princess have no matches this weekend while the Brights would be up against third placed Sri Manjari.

Both teams can mathematically displace the Princess of they win their encounter. But the chances are better for Brights who have a far better scoring rate compared to Sri Manjari.

In another match, Damansara and Sri Devi Angels would be in search of their first win in the PLK. Both teams are currently lying at the bottom of the table and would be hoping for a win to boost their chances of finishing in the top three.

WEEK FIVE VENUE AND SCHEDULE CHANGE

The Sri Devi Kabaddi Club will host week five of the Premier League Kabaddi at their grounds in Puchong 14th mile on the 17th of May 2009.

We apologise for the late confirmation of the venue due to some technical problems.

The PLK organising committee has also decided to postpone the match between Sri Devi Tiger and Selayang to June 7th, 2009.

The change is as a mark of respect to the late K. Ramachandran of the Selayang squad. It is also to give a chance for his teammates to come back on a later date with a more composed mind.

The match between Kg Pandan Lions and Sri Devi Tigers, originally scheduled for June 7th, will now be brought forward to be played on May 7th.

Please take note of the changes and ensure that your teams arrive on schedule.

DEEPEST CONDOLENCE

One of the countries best young kabaddi talents - Ramachandran Krishnasamy - was lost forever today.

The youngster from the Selayang Kabaddi squad succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident earlier last night.

The executive committee and members of the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur would like to extend our deepest condolences to Ramachandran's family on their loss.

The funeral is expected to take place later tomorrow from No 40A, Jalan L/P 3, Taman Laksamana Permai, 68100 Batu Caves, Selangor.

Ramachandran is a key defensive player in the Selayang Kabaddi squad, currently among the frontrunners in the inaugural Premier Kabaddi League.

He had the potential of better things in the future and his untimely death is a great loss to the sport of kabaddi in Malaysia.

KAKL mourns the lost of someone so young and our hearts are with the rest of his family and friends.

WEEK FIVE POSTPONED

The Bukit Pelandok Kabaddi Team

The changes has been confirmed to allow teams to participate at the Bukit Pelandok Open Kabaddi Championships on May 10th.

The decision was made in the interest of the development of the game and the committment of the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur (KAKL) to assist others in developing the game.
