Ishwar to lend golden touch

Former national coach Dr Ishwar Angadi is being sought by the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur (KAKL) to fine tune the Federal Territory SUKMA kabaddi team.

With winning both the gold medals at stake firmly in mind, KAKL hopes that Dr Ishwar's expertise would give the side the golden edge.

KAKL president S.T. Arasu said that he had already discussed the matter with Dr Ishwar.

"Ishwar is more than happy to assist the team. However, there is still the matter of getting the necessary paperwork to be done," said Arasu.

Dr Ishwar is attached with the Sports Authority of India (SAI). He coached the Malaysian side to the Busan Asian Games as well as the Asian Championships in 2003.

He is a close personal friend of the KAKL president. Arasu was the team manager to the Busan Asian Games and was personally responsible in hiring Dr Ishwar to coach in Malaysia.

Both of them were also responsible in rewriting the kabaddi rules, currently being used at the world level. The duo also worked hand-in-hand to come out with the Level One Coaching Manual.

"I will discuss the matter further with the SAI regional director Mr Ranawat. The director has always been helpful in the past and I do not see any major problems in getting Ishwar released from his duties to coach the SUKMA team," said Arasu.

If everything goes as planned, Ishwar would arrive here in mid May to handle the team.

The states chief coach R. Balamurugan has worked before with Dr Ishwar, both as a player and as an assistant coach.

"We believe that Ishwar's presence here would be a great boost to the state team. The players would certainly gain a lot from him," said Arasu.

He added, although Dr Ishwar's release may take a month or so to cement, his name has been submitted to the Majlis Sukan Wilayah Persekutuan to be registered as a coach of the team.

More than 25 teams from around the world would be taking part in the tournament which would feature competitions in National Style, Beach Kabaddi as well as Circle Kabaddi.

Rule Clarification

During the recent kabaddi tournament organised by the Malaysian Indian Heritage Association at the Kayu Ara Grounds, teams participating at the Premier League Kabaddi made a clean sweep of the top three positions.

Sri Devi finished champions ahead of Selayang. Damansara finished third after Sivasangkari failed to play the third place playoff.

There were a number of rules that were disputed by the some teams. We would like to highlight a couple of the disputed rules.

1. Whether the bonus point can be awarded after touch or struggle during the tie-breaker or sudden death or what is now known as the golden rule?

The answer is an emphatic NO.

The rules are clear on this instance.
The first section to understand is in the situation is:
• The existing bonus line will no longer be effective. Instead the baulk line would be treated as the Baulk cum Bonus Line. All the bonus line rules shall be applicable on the baulk line.

The second section that clarifies this is:
• Point would only be awarded if the Bonus Line is crossed before the touch or struggle.

So any dispute raised by the teams on this issue is wrong.

The second is a situation when a raider after a successful raid falls at the midline with his body on both sides of the court. The opposing raider makes a raid during this time, crosses the midline, touches the fallen player and goes back to his court. Was the decision to award one point for each team correct?

The answer to this is a YES.

The reason is simple, the first raider was given out because at the point when the opponent started his raid, the first raider was out of bounds.
The rule on this is:
• When a Raid is on, the anti/s shall not touch the Raiders court (including the lobbies). The anti/s who violates this Rule shall be declared out while the raid is allowed to continue.

The opposing raider was also given out because, the he did not make a successful raid. The first raider was already out of bounds and the opposing raider did not cross the baulk line before crossing back to his court.

LEMBU PUNYA SUSU SAPI PUNYA NAMA

The National Level Traditional Sports Carnival would be held from 24th-26th July 2009 in Ipoh.

Kabaddi was included in the carnival through the efforts made by the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur (KAKL). The KAKL also assisted the Sports Ministry to conduct workshops for the event in Sabah, Sarawak, Northern region (Perak, Perlis, Kedah, Penang) as well as southern region (Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan).

KAKL's role at the tournament, however, would be confined to only the participation of the state men and women teams.

The Kabaddi Association of Malaysia (KAM), which had failed to make any effort to get the sport into the event, has now claimed their bragging right to conduct the tournament and would nominate all the technical officials for the tournament.

KAKL is surprised to note that the KAM has finally realised they have a bigger role to play in the development of kabaddi rather than just trumping their authority over trivial issues.

However as in the past, KAKL does not expect the KAM to be fair in their treatment of the KAKL.

We were already made to understand that the KAM deputy president Maniam Manikkam and his sidekick from Sg Petani, were quick off the blocks in running down the KAKL and its officials at the organising committee held in Putrajaya earlier today.

The KAKL also does not expect the KAM to have the courtesy to nominate any of the KL technical officials for the tournament. At the SUKMA last year, none of the KAKL qualified officials were picked while some states had more than half a dozen technical officials selected.

The KAKL hopes that the KAM does not make the efforts made by the KAKL to get the event off the ground by falsely proclaiming their non-existent role thus far.

The KAKL is nevertheless happy and proud in our effort to get kabaddi given due recognition at the national level carnival by the Sports Ministry.

Kabaddi included in Traditional Sports Carnival

The Youth and Sports Ministry has included kabaddi as one of the sports in the National Traditional Sports Carnival.

The inclusion was made through the efforts made by the Kuala Lumpur Kabaddi Association.

Kabaddi will be the first non-Malay traditional sport to be included in the annual carnival. The other sports competed at the carnival are Galah Panjang, Tarik Tali, Laga Ayam, Sepak Raga Ratus, Sepak Bulu Ayam, Rebut Negeri and Kelereng.

The Traditional Sports Carnival has been taking place for the last five years.

Each state runs its own state level carnival and the winners of each sport at the state level are picked to represent the state at a national level competition. Kedah is expected to be the first of the states to conduct their state level competition on June 14 at a Felda near BUkit Kayu Hitam.

Last year, Sarawak emerged as the overall champions at the national level competition held at the Taman Tasek Titiwangsa in KL.

The Kabaddi competition at the carnival would be for both the men's and women's team.

In line with the inclusion, the Sports Ministry has sought the assistance of Kelab Sukan Tradisi Harmoni Kuala Lumpur and the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur to assist them in conducting workshops for youth organisations throughout Malaysia.

The first workshop was held in Kuching, Sarawak from May 15-17. The northern zone workshop was held in Baling Kedah from May 18-20. The northern zone workshop was attended by youth organisations from Kedah, Perak, Perlis and Penang.

The next workshop is scheduled in Kota Kinabalu from May 27-29.

The Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur is thankful to the Sports Ministry for accepting our suggestion to include kabaddi in the carnival. The inclusion is expected to help greatly in the growth of the sport among the grassroots.

Players get a chance to understand the rules

The Technical Course in session

The participants at the KAKL Technical Course

The first KAKL Technical Course also turned out to be a chance for the state players to understand the rules of the game much better.

State players were invited to attend the course to ensure that they were also equipped with the knowledge on the duties of a Technical Official as well as to get an in-depth insight into the Rules of the Game.

While it was a new experience for the players, for approximately 10 others, this will be a stepping stone for them to be full fledged Technical Officials.

The course was conducted by KAKL president S.T. Arasu, who is a qualified international Technical Course Conductor. He has conducted such courses in Malaysia as well as during past Asian Championships and also South Asian Games.

KAKL Technical Committee Chairman L. Anbarasu and former national Technical Committee Chairman V. Chandran were among those who also turned up to assist in the course.

The course will continue until Sunday.

KAKL Level One Technical Course

The KAKL Level One Technical Course would be conducted from January 16-18 in an effort to produce state level qualified Technical Officials.

The decision was made by the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur to ensure that state level tournaments are not affected by lack of qualified Technical Officials.

Entry is open to only KL based participants. The course would be conducted from 7-10pm on January 16 and 17 and from 3 pm to 8pm on January 18.

Entry fees of RM 15 per person is payable and only covers the cost of course materials.

The Level One Technical Course would include

1. Rules, Regulations and Interpretations
2. Qualities of a good official
3. Mechanism of officiating
4. Preparation of play field and markings
5. Use of signals - giving decisions - coordination in officiating

To ensure that state players are also updated with the rules, the KAKL has made it compulsory for all state players to attend the course. However, the players need not pay the entry fees.

KAKL president S.T. Arasu, who has conducted national and international level Technical Courses, would be the chief lecturer for the course and he will be assisted by another qualified Technical Official L. Anbarasu and R. Balamurugan.

It should be noted that the current Kabaddi Rules Book used by the national and international bodies was drafted in its entirety by S.T. Arasu and former national coach Dr. Ishwar Angadi.

For further information on the Technical Course please contact the KAKL secretariat.
