DRAGONS RULE THE ROOST

Sri Devi Dragons as expected clinched the inaugural KAKL Premier League Kabaddi men's title at the Kampong Pandan Grounds.

They struggled to defeat home team Kampong Pandan Lions in their final League match to ensure their unbeaten run in the competition.

A rejuvenated Lions held the upper hand in the match but were let down by a lapse of concentration in the closing stages of their game to lose 35-41.

They led for much of the game and led 21-16 at the end of the firs half. They stretched their lead to as much as seven at one stage. But with just five minutes to go, the Lions gave away crucial points on defense to see the Dragons draw level at 30-30.

In a nail-biting finish, it was the Lions who faltered. The Dragons pushed ahead and won the game confortably.

A tepid Selayang suprisingly slumped to a 44-48 lost to Sri Devi Tigers but held on to their second place finish in the league.

The Lions and Tigers finished level on 14 points but third place went the Lions way on a better score difference.

In the only women's match played Sri Manjari stunned Segar Brights 67-59 but the win did not change the positions the team would finish. Sri Devi Princess had already clinched the overall crown ahead of Segar with Manjari finishing third.

The prize presentation for the League would be held after the conclusion on the KAKL Knockout Cup which is in the semi-final stage.

Pictures from the final day competition is available here.

PRINCESS ARE NOW QUEENS

Sri Devi Princess have clinched the inaugural Premier League Kabaddi women’s title with one match in hand.

The Princess came back from behind to beat nearest rivals Segar Brights 53-50 to take an unassailable lead atop the points standings.

The Princess can afford to lose their final group match against teammates Sri Devi Angels and still walk away with the crown.

With the League title safely in hand, the Princess would be attempting to make it a grand double by winning the Kuala Lumpur Knockout Cup title as well.

Brights were unlucky to have lost the game, having at the upper hand for most of the match against the Princess.

Both teams were tied 50-50 with just over a minute remaining. However, the last Brights raider was caughtout by the alert Princess defence. The catch gave them three points and the win.

Despite, the lost, Brights would still finish second in the overall standings.

In another women’s match, Sri Manjari thrashed an out of sorts Sri Devi Princess 62-25.

In the men’s competition, Sri Devi Dragons looks poised to make it a grand double for the club after beating table toppers Selayang 53-25. It was the second defeat for Selayang to the Dragons in the league.

Selayang still stop the table on countback ahead of the Dragons, but have played two more matches.

Dragons, despite their superiority against Selayang, were made to work extra hard in their second match against Sri Devi Tigers.

The Tigers, took the game against their more experienced rivals, leading in the first half but succumbing to a close 29-33 defeat to the Dragons.

Close on the top two teams heels is Kg Pandan Lions, who still have an outside chance of taking second place.

The Lions easily beat rivals Kg Pandan Tigers 98-36 in their match.

SEGAR OFF THE BLOCK

Segar finally got off the blocks in the Premier League Kabaddi men's competition at the Batu Caves Grounds.

The perennial losers finally notched up a win in the competition with a 85-37 win over a depleted Tamillan Juniors today.

The Juniors paid the price for not fielding their best team against the much improved Segar.

Segar took full advantage of the opponents problems to pick up five lonas enroute to the thumping win.

In an earlier match, Segar had lost 28-86 to Selayang. Selayang also beat Kampong Pandan Tigers 62-36 in their first match.

Selayang got off to a slow start in their match against The Tigers, but pocked enough firepower to subdue their opponents.

The two wins saw Selayang moving within two points of table toppers Sri Devi Dragons.

The Dragons, who did not play today, are the only unbeaten team in the competition.

The two teams look likely of finishing the league in the same position although both teams have six more matches each to play.

Selayang's only loss in the competition was at the hands of the Dragons.

In the women's competition, only one match was played with Sri Manjari running away with a comfortable 87-11 win over Segar Shines.

A number of matches in the PLK was postponed as mark of respect to the demise of the fathers of two players from the Sri Devi and Tamillan teams.

The PLK would resume with the next round of matches on September 27 at the Kayu Ara Grounds.

BRIGHTS OUTSHINE ANGELS

Segar Brights shot up to the top of the Premier League Kabaddi women’s standings with a thumping 87-29 win over Sri Devi Angels at the Kampong Pandan Grounds on Sunday.

The win saw the Brights claim top position ahead of Sri Devi Princess although both teams are tied on eight points apiece.

The Brights, however, top table on better differential scoring rate compared to the Princess.

The Princess picked up a 66-44 win over Sri Manjari in their match to maintain their unbeaten streak in the competition.

The Princess also have a match in hand over the Brights and could reclaim their position at the top next week.

In the men’s competition, Selayang kept up their chase for the title with a hard earned 31-29 win over a resurgent Kampong Pandan Lions.

The match between the two sides could have gone either way with both teams exchanging leads several times.

Only one point separated both teams until the very last raid of the game, but the Lions failed to pick up the crucial tying point.

The Lions have gone from strength to strength in the league and are beginning to show that they would be a handful to the other title contenders.

However, their poor run in the early stages of the league may have paid put to their hopes of winning the title.

In an earlier match, Selayang defeated Damansara 86-20.

Despite the two wins, Selayang still trail table toppers Sri Devi Dragons in the points standings. The Dragons lead the table with 20 points ahead of Selayang with 14.

While the Dragons did not play on Sunday, their second team Sri Devi Tigers carved out an easy 85-39 win over Segar. The win ensured that the Dragons remained in third spot in the points table.

Segar were unlucky to lose 56-58 to Damansara in another match. Despite leading by four points in the closing stages of the game, Segar lost composure in the closing stages and were denied their first win the competition.

LIONS CLAW UP

Kg Pandan Lions roared into third spot in the Premier League Kabaddi (PLK) standings after picking up full points at the Country Homes Rawang Grounds on Sunday.

The Lions, who had gotten off to a slow start in the PLK due to the rebuilding of their team, are beginning to play more cohesively as a unit.

Their younger players are beginning to show more maturity and it has begun to reap the right results for the Lions.

Last week, the Lions had stretched top ranked Sri Devi Dragons in the semi-finals of the Federal Territory Traditional Sports Carnival.

Their first opponent in the PLK on Sunday were not in the same league as the Dragons, but the Lions showed better teamwork than they have done in the past against minnows Segar.

The Lions ran off with their biggest win in the competition with a 124-44 trashing of Segar.

The Lions were then gifted with a walkover by Damansara in their second match. The walkover meant that the Lions would take full points with a 50-0 margin.

Damansara also failed to turn up for their match against Sri Devi Dragons, resulting in the Dragons taking a 50-0 win.

Damansara has fourteen (14) days to appeal the result.

Damansara also failed to turn up for both the matches against Sri Manjari and Segar Brights in the women’s competition.

Bad weather saw the match between Sri Devi Princess and Segar Shines abandoned with the Princess in a commanding position. That match will be replayed.

In other men’s matches, Kg Pandan Tigers picked up their first win of the league by beating Segar 70-52. The win lifted the Tigers ahead of Segar in the standings.

Sri Devi Tigers moved level on points with Selayang, Kg Pandan Lions and Tamillan Kabaddi after beating Kg Pandan Tigers 106-50.

With the Dragons poised to run away with the PLK title, the four teams are now level with only scoring average deciding their positions.

The Dragons kept their winning ways with a surprisingly easy 77-41 win over Tamillan Juniors, despite missing four first team players.

The Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur (KAKL) is made to understand that the club has been torn apart by rival factions and were unable to eke out a proper team.

With their exclusion, all their previous matches in the competition would be also cancelled.

NEW RULES IN EFFECT FOR PKL

The Premier League Kabaddi is concerned about the continued last minute postponements of matches by participating teams.

While the PLK allowed for some postponements in the interest of the development of the game, it is now felt that teams are beginning to abuse the process for trivial reasons.

As such the following rules would be in place immediately.

1. Any request for postponement of matches must be made in writing at least seven days before the start of the scheduled match.
2. No request for postponement would be entertained if it was made less than seven days before the scheduled match
3. The PLK deserves the right to reject any such application if it deems the request does not have strong valid reasons.
4. Teams that fail to play their scheduled matches in such cases would be penalised as follows:
4.1 A mandatory RM 100 fine
4.2 The scheduled match would be awarded to their opponents with a scoreline of 0-50
4.3 If any team fails to play two matches as scheduled they would be scratched from the PLK and a mandatory fine of RM 500 would be imposed.

Final warnings are also issued to the following teams:

MIG Sentosa and Segar Kabaddi

a. The team would be scratched from the league if they fail to turn up for their next match on June 21st 2009.
b. If the team is scratched, all their previous results in the competition would be also scratched.
c. If the team is scratched, they would be barred from taking part in any Kuala Lumpur Kabaddi Association (KAKL) sanctioned tournaments for a period of twelve (12) months.
d. A mandatory fine of RM 500 would be imposed on the team

SELAYANG SOAR

Selayang Kabaddi moved up to second spot in the Premier League Kabaddi standings after notching up two wins at the Batu Caves Grounds.

Their move up the ranks was helped by the shock defeat of Tamillan Kabaddi at the hands of Kg Pandan Lions.

The Lions roared to a 53-42 win over the Tamillans in an exciting match-up.

The Tamillans were playing without one of their first choice players and failed to get into their rhythm. The Lions played one of their better matches in the league and were helped by superb raiding by their younger players.

The win has rekindled the Lions hopes of a top four finish in the competition while the Tamillans will have to work harder to maintain their status among the top three.

Selayang played a more composed against both their opponents – Sri Devi Tigers and Tamillan Juniors.

Against the Tigers, Selayang started off slowly and were locked in a tooth and nail fight in the early stages of their match.

But the Tigers got too impatient as the match progressed while Selayang played with more composure to slowly assert their superiority in both defence and raiding to walk away 57-36 winners.

It was the same case in their match against the Tamillan Juniors. Despite finding the going tough in the early stages in controlling the Juniors raiders, Selayang got into their defensive best to foil the Juniors 57-33.

In another match, frontrunners Sri Devi Dragons kept up their winning ways with a 70-25 win over a much improved Kg Pandan Tigers.

In the only women’s competition of the day, Sri Devi Angels stunned Sri Manjari 55-48. Both teams were locked at 22-22 at halftime and the lead changed hands several times in the second half.

It was the better teamwork in defence that enabled the Angels to pull off a deserved win.

Selayang bt Sri Devi Tigers 57-36
Kg Pandan Lions bt Tamillan Kabaddi 53-42

DAY OF THE DRAGONS

Tamillan Kabaddi’s unbeaten run in the Premier League Kabaddi came to an end at the hands of table toppers Dri Devi Dragons at the Kampong Pandan Grounds.

Until their meeting, both teams were the only unbeaten teams in the league. But when the dust settled after a heated match, it was the Dragons who stood tall.

The Dragons maintained their stranglehold at the top of the points standings with an emphatic 59-31 win over the Tamillans.

And the Dragons managed to pull off the win despite missing two of the first team players through injuries.

Earlier, the Dragons also defeated their junior squad – Sri Devi Tigers - 73-64 after being shocked by an early onslaught by their younger rivals.

The Tigers stunned the Dragons into action after carving up two lonas over their high-riding teammates.

Only three matches on schedule were played this week, allowing some of the teams to participate in another tournament played in Kapar.

In the other match, Tamillan Juniors defeated a much improved Kg Pandan Tigers 74-34.

In the women’s competition, Sri Devi Princess picked up their biggest win yet with a 118-14 thrashing of Damansara.
Damansara were forced to field a depleted side and lacked the teamwork needed to foil the more experienced Princess.

In another match, Sri Devi Angels picked up their first win of the competition with a 63-44 win over Segar Shines.

The win did not come easy as the Angels started on a disastrous note, trailing by as many of 15 points at one stage in the first half.

However, they used their bigger physique to full use as the match progress to notch up the win.

Sri Devi Dragons bt Tamillan Kabaddi 59-31

It will be a day of judgement for Tamillan Kabaddi in the Premier League Kabaddi championships this weekend (31st May 2009) in Kg Pandan.

The Tamillans will see their unbeaten run in the competition under serious threat as they will be up against table toppers Sri Devi Dragons.

The Tamillans and the Dragons are the only unbeaten teams in the league.

The Dragons will play two matches this week. They play their junior squad – Sri Devi Tigers in their opening match.

In the women’s competition, Sri Devi Princess would be looking to strengthen their grip at the top of the table when they take on Damansara.

DRAGONS ON FIRE

Segar failed to stop the rampaging Dragons

Leaders Sri Devi Dragons crushed Segar 127-44 to keep up their relentless push for the inaugural Premier League Kabaddi crown.

Playing at their homeground in Puchong, the Dragons were in commanding form to notch up their sixth consecutive win in the competition.

The Dragons were beaten for the first time in more than a year at the Bukit Pelandok Kabaddi Championships in Negri Sembilan last week and were determined to put behind their disappointment against Segar.

Hot in their chase is Tamillan Kabaddi, who are the only other remaining unbeaten team in the competition.

Unlike the Dragons, the Tamillans struggled to a 31-21 win over Damansara in their match on Sunday. The Tamillans have been struggling of late against the weaker teams and were almost beaten by Segar recently.

The side have two crucial matches in the next round of the Premier League Kabaddi on May 31. They will be up against leaders Dragons as well as third placed Selayang.

If their recent form is of any indication, the Tamillans could lose their unbeaten streak in two weeks time.

In another match Damansara suffered their second defeat of the week as they were also beaten by Tamillan Juniors 36-52.

It was a mixed day for the Kg Pandan Lions. They defeated their second team – Kg Pandan Tigers – 82-29 but were beaten 33-42 by a much improved Sri Devi Tigers.

In the women’s competition, Segar Brights moved into second place in the table behind Sri Devi Princess after defeating a lackluster Sri Manjari 62-43.

They are tied on 6 points with the Princess but have an inferior scoring rate and have played one extra match.

WEEK FIVE VENUE AND SCHEDULE CHANGE

The Sri Devi Kabaddi Club will host week five of the Premier League Kabaddi at their grounds in Puchong 14th mile on the 17th of May 2009.

We apologise for the late confirmation of the venue due to some technical problems.

The PLK organising committee has also decided to postpone the match between Sri Devi Tiger and Selayang to June 7th, 2009.

The change is as a mark of respect to the late K. Ramachandran of the Selayang squad. It is also to give a chance for his teammates to come back on a later date with a more composed mind.

The match between Kg Pandan Lions and Sri Devi Tigers, originally scheduled for June 7th, will now be brought forward to be played on May 7th.

Please take note of the changes and ensure that your teams arrive on schedule.
