SEASON OF LEARNING

It would be a season of learning for all the teams participating in the inaugural Premier League Kabaddi (PLK), starting this Sunday (March 1) at the Dataran Remaja, Bukit Jalil.

Ten teams will vie for the honours in the men’s league while another six teams will fight it out in the women’s competition.

The PLK, organised by the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur (KAKL), will offer more than RM17,000 in prize money.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Department YB Datuk S.K. Devamany would officially launch the PLK.

The men’s competition is expected to be an open affair although Sri Devi Dragons are likely to shoulder the burden as the pre-tournament favourites.

Kg Pandan Lions, MIG Sentosa, Tamilan Kabaddi and Damansara Kabaddi are all capable of upsetting the formbooks.

Kampar Kabaddi, Sri Murugan, Segar Kabaddi, Taman Selayang and Sri Devi Tigers are the other teams in the fray.

Sri Devi Dragons boasts of a number of players who played pivotal roles in Kuala Lumpur’s win at the Sukma demonstration tournament and also the second place at the International Inter City Kabaddi Championships in December.

Sri Devi Dragons trumpcard would certainly be their main raider K. Siva, who was picked as the Best Player at the International Inter City Kabaddi Championships.
The team also boast of several former senior and junior internationals including P. Vimalenthiran, S. Saravanan and M. Paramasiven.

MIG Sentosa will have the services of three former junior internationals and two senior internationals – K. Magendran and S. Rajasegar.

Tamillan Kabaddi, strengthened by a number of Indian expatriates, are also strong bets for the title. Kg Pandan Lions are coached by former international and current national women’s coach R. Balamarugan and are equally capable of winning the title.

The darkhorses in the tournament should be the experienced Damansara Kabaddi Club.

It would be difficult to pick a clear favourite in the women’s league as all teams are playing in such competition for the first time.

The PLK matches would be played every fortnight at various locations in the Klang Valley and would end on October 11.

Apart from the League competition there would also be a concurrent knockout competition.

The final of the knockout competition would take place on October 18.

KAM to settle problems "immediately"

The Berita Harian has made a follow-up report to the notice given to the Kabaddi Association of Malaysia (KAM) regarding the validity of its General Meeting.

KAM President Shahidan Kasssim was quoted as saying that he would call for a meeting with the affected parties immediately. He had added that the problems was caused by individuals who have mixed personal interest with volunteer work for the association.

The excerpt from the report in Malay is as follows and the full report can be read here in the Berita Harian.

The KAKL wrote to the KAM President regarding the issue in December and are still waiting for a reply from him.

KAM's General Meeting in the news again

The Berita Harian has highlighted the problems facing the Kabbadi Association of Malaysia (KAM) in their article and linked it to the prospect of KAM president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim wanting to stand for elections in the Olympic Council of Malaysia.

The Berita Harian reports

The KAM was given 14 days to resolve the issues raised by the Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur and Kabaddi Association of Selangor in a letter dated 16th February, 2009.

KAKL lodges Police Report against Maniam

Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur president S.T. Arasu, on behalf of the association, has lodged a police report against the Kabaddi Association of Malaysia (KAM) deputy president Maniam Manikkam for spreading malicious lies about the association during a radio interview.

The KAKL will proceed to sue Maniam for defamation if he does not make his apology to the association.

"Maniam decided to go on a tirade against the KAKL in a radio interview not realising that he was only damaging the game. It is like the Malay saying that when one spits into the air it lands on his own face"

The Sports Commissioner's office has given the Kabaddi Association of Malaysia (KAM) fourteen days to settle the issues raised against the validity of their General Meeting held on December 14, 2008.

KAM AGM invalid?

The Kabaddi Association of Kuala Lumpur has requested the Sports Commissioner to declare the General Meeting conducted by the Kabaddi Association of Malaysia (KAM) last December illegal.

KAKL was not invited to the meeting with any valid reasons. The KAKL had written a letter to the KAM president asking for an explanation. However, after almost two months, the KAM president nor any of the KAM office bearers have replied to our demand for an explanation.

The KAKL has now written to the Sports Commissioner to take the necessary action. The KAKL are now also mulling legal action against the KAM for their unfair treatment and complete lack of adherence to the rule of law.

The letters are posted below. Click on the letters to enlarge.

Letters that go unanswered

The KAKL have been queried numerous times that the association has failed to obtain proper approvals from the national body in running our tournaments.

We would like to put on record and explain that the Kabaddi Association of Malaysia has failed to reply to almost all of our letters to them and at times look clueless in carrying out their duties.

Proper and responsible management calls for replies to queries in reasonable time. It is unquestionably irresponsible for a national body for not only in their failure to in having the courtesy to reply to our letters in due time but for their key officials going around and sabotaging events conducted by the KAKL.

We are posting all of the documents that we have sent to the KAM and going to let our members and others who have been clamoring for answers from us to make their own judgement. Please click on the objects to enlarge the letters.

1. KL protest letter in 2006 to the KAM received no reply from the national body. The matter was referred to the Sports Commissioner and the decision was given in favour of KAKL. KAM was directed to withdraw all actions against the KAKL and its members.

2. KAKL offered to host the Presidents Cup kabaddi Championships in 2009 in a letter dated 27th June 2008.
Till date, KAKL has yet to receive a reply from the KAM.

3. KAKL requested for the following in a letter dated 27th June 2008
a. A better format of appointment of Technical Officials
b. To Conduct a Technical Course in KL
c. Action against the Sukma Chief of Referee
d. Request for states to informed of change in the Rules of the Game
e. Offered to host the National Under-15 in 2008
The KAM did not reply to our letter nor did it take any steps to look into our requests.

4.KAKL requested the sanction for the International Inter City Kabaddi Championships from KAM in a letter dated 27th June 2008 and made a follow-up requesting for the sanction as well as the guidelines for tournaments a month later.
KAM replied via letter only in November approving the tournament. A week before the tournaments original date KAKL president was informed via a telephone call by the KAM executive secretary that the KAM deputy president wants to withdraw the sanction. The President informed the executive secretary that the tournament would go ahead and if any withdrawal was made at the late juncture without any proper reasons, the KAKL would sue the KAM. No reply came to the KAM after that but officials from the KAM went on a disinformation propaganda against the KAKL.

5. On October 22, 2008, the KAKL requested for the sanction of the KAKL Kabaddi League to be launched in December 2008. No reply was given by the KAM. On January 5, 2009, KAKL made a follow-up letter and till date the KAM has not bothered to reply to either letter.

6. On January 11, 2009, the KAKL requested the KAM to sanction the City Day Kabaddi Championships being held under the auspices of the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the FT Day. No reply was given by the KAM.
